Why do so many remember the first Easter?

Consider the facts for yourself this year.

Christ crucified - the idea is a stumbling block to many. A crucified king. It seems so foolish! But to those who believe it is the power of God to bring forgiveness. Over the next three weeks we’ll build a Biblical Definition of the Church by thinking about what the church ‘does’:

Feb 14 - The Church Gathers around Jesus

Spending time together with our church family is an important thing to do... and it's fun too. This year we will be travelling to the Sunshine Coast, and the Starlings will come with us. Dave and Nicole will get us thinking about what it means to have homes that are open to the gospel.

Christians live as aliens and strangers in this world, sojourners - just passing through, on the way to heaven. We have a sure hope of sharing in Jesus' resurrection, but we expect to be tested while we wait. The apostle Peter wrote to Christians scattered through the Roman world, reminding them of the salvation they have and encouraging them to persevere despite sufferring and opposition. God still speaks to us through those words, and there is much we can learn.

Why not re-think Jesus this Christmas? Come to NightChurch with us the Sunday before Christmas (6:30pm) and again on Christmas morning (8:30am), at Kenmore South State School.

At NightChurch we'll be hearing about what the devil doesn't want you to know - LIFE IN JESUS NAME. John chapters 13-17 contain Jesus' last words to his disciples before his death. In the final hours he shared with his disciples what life would be like for them after his death - lives lived in the power of his Spirit. It would be an era when his followers would live radical, world-confronting, God-honouring lives characterised by answered prayer and fruit bearing witness, a life you will have if you truly love Jesus.

At church over four weeks we will look at the OT book of Micah. As a contemporary of Isaiah, Micah also warns of God's coming judgment because of Israel's corruption and disobedience. Along with the rest of the world we are called to witness God's Judgment of Israel. As we do we are warned by it, and we are given reason to hope in our God, who is truly like no other God. Here's the plan;

13 September: God's Judgment of Corrupt Israel (ch1-2)
20 September: God's Judgment of Corrupt Leaders (ch3)
27 September: Hope beyond Judgment (ch4-5)
4 October:Hope in our God (ch6-7)

Reading the OT book of Isaiah is a daunting prospect. It's one of the longest books of the Bible, it mentions names and places that we are not familiar with, and some bits are just odd. However it is well worth the effort. You can gauge how important it is by how many times it gets quoted in the New Testament.  Although it was written hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus, we get an incredibly vivid picture of what Jesus would achieve on the cross (eg. Isaiah 53:5-6). Isaiah gives us a look at God's incredible plan to judge and to save. This is an amazing part of God’s word, and we should not neglect it. Is that enough reason?

Over the next 8 weeks we will be looking at the first half of Isaiah at church on Sundays, and the second half in our mid-week Growth Groups.

The Gospel of Jesus announces forgiveness and hope for all who put their trust in Jesus. Over the next few weeks at church we will be exploring the extent of the mercy of God - as we work our way through chapters 6-16 of the New Testament book of Romans. Meanwhile we are studying Romans 6-12 in Growth Groups. Here's the plan for Church on Sundays...

On Sunday 16 April we will begin a series of talks looking at relationships. We'll look at what the Bible has to say about marriage, kids, sex, guidance and so on. It will be a good chance to reflect on what it means to be a Christian in whatever family situation we exist!
